Tonsillectomy

Tonsillectomy is the process of removing tonsils through surgery performed by ENT specialists in Kolkata. Tonsils are two oval-shaped tissue pads situated at the rear of the throat, one on each side.

Why it’s done

A tonsillectomy is performed to treat:

  • Frequent, persistent or severe tonsillitis
  • Complications due to inflamed tonsils
  • Bleeding of tonsils
  • Other rare conditions of tonsils

Complications of inflamed tonsils

Tonsils may become inflamed following recurrent or constant infections, or they may get enlarged naturally. A tonsillectomy could be suggested by ENT doctors in Kolkata for treating the following disorders caused by enlarged tonsils:

  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Disturbed breathing while sleeping
  • Difficulty in swallowing

Other disorders of the tonsils

A tonsillectomy could be performed to treat certain rare diseases of the tonsils like:

  • Cancerous tissues in either or both tonsils
  • Frequent bleeding from the blood vessels close to the surface of tonsils

Risks

According to ENT specialists in Kolkata, like any other surgery, tonsillectomy has certain risks:

  • Side effects of anesthetics:Medicines offered to make one sleep during surgery may cause minor, temporary health issues like nausea, headache, muscle soreness or vomiting. Long-term, serious troubles are rare.
  • Swelling:Swelling of tongue may cause breathing troubles, especially during the first few hours following the procedure.
  • Bleeding during surgery. In some rare cases, severe bleeding may occur during surgery which requires further treatment followed by an extended hospital stay.
  • Bleeding during healing.Bleeding may occur during the course of healing, especially if the wound scab is removed too soon.
  • Infection: In rare cases, surgery may result in an infection that could require additional treatment.

Almost everyone who has undergone a tonsillectomy is likely to experience pain. It is mostly in the throat and often in the ears but could also be felt in the neck or jaw.
